Placing Hold logo

Quick Facts

  • Allows you to have books owned by other libraries in the Joint Library Catalog delivered to Mat-Su College
  • Reserves books that are already checked out so that you will get them when they become available
How to place a hold

The Joint Library Catalog uses a system called "Place Hold" that allows you to obtain material from the other libraries on the system with a click of the mouse.

From either the brief or full catalog record, click the "Place Hold" link. The location of the link is shown in the picture above.

Clicking on the link takes you to a screen that asks for your library card number and PIN. Your library card number is on the back of your library card (or student ID) beneath the barcode. Your PIN is a four-digit number that you chose when your library card was activated.

Once logged in, you will encounter a screen like this one:

Place hold pick up location

The default pick up location is Mat-Su College. You can change that by clicking on the down arrow to the right of "UAA Mat-Su" and selecting another location. If all available copies are currently checked out, the system will keep trying to obtain the item for the next 120 days. If your hold is not filled within that time, you will be notified that it has expired.

To complete the transaction, click "Place Hold".

If everything works properly, you will see a screen that says, "Hold Placed!"

When the item arrives, you will receive an e-mail or phone call.

Items that are currently available from the UAA Consortium Library take about three days to arrive. Material from The Anchorage Public Library, Kodiak, Seward, or Valdez will arrive in about a week.

Items that are currently checked out may already have other patrons waiting for them. Holds are filled in the order that they are received.

Some reasons that your hold may not be accepted are:

  • Your library card has expired
  • You owe the library money

Not all of the material in the Joint Library Catalog is available for request, so a "place hold" link does not appear for every title.
