Training was held on campus April 14-16, 2008.

Mat-Su College has the first and only CERT trained team in the entire University of Alaska system. Go MSC!!
Here are photos from the disaster simulation drill that took place on April 16th.

Gearing up.

The "Incident Commander" in action.

The triage team is ready!

It was very dark in the disaster area. The following photos were taken with a flash.

A big thank you to our volunteer victims! They were all MSC students.

And thank you MSC staff for your hard work and attendance.

The first search team enters the disaster area.

The search team finds one victim unconscious and
another pinned under 500 pounds of debris.

Assessing and moving.

These victims kept their cool and continued to bang on the walls and call for help.

Luckily she has some reading material handy.

An example of "cribbing" used to prop up heavy objects.

The search team discuss how to get an unconscious victim out...and then use an office chair!

Hold the compress on your head until we can get you out!
Blankets or tarps work well to move or drag victims.

Some victims may not be heard -- search all rooms!

The search team has removed the office furniture
from the victim and the triage team moves in.

Tell me where it hurts.

Positioning victim on blanket for move to treatment area.

Apparently the continuous yelling for help wore them out.

Triage team at work again.

Incident Commander keeping track of teams and victims.

Search team moves in to help triage team move a victim.

Victims are moved to a treatment area.

Keep them warm.

Most victims were safely extracted
and given medical attention.

The next phase of hands on training dealt with fire.

One team member keeps a hand on the "firefighter"
ready to yank her back if overcome by the fire.

I hate helmet head!

Can I wear this in the library?

CERT

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

http://www.matsugov.us/PublicSafety/CERT_NW.cfm

If a widespread disaster were to occur, emergency personnel would likely be overwhelmed and, based upon the severity of the disaster, could be delayed - possibly for days- in responding to your needs.

Would you know what to do? CERT is a free 20 hour course that teaches people how to take care of themselves, their family and their neighbors in the event of a disaster. The course covers Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety, Search and Rescue Techniques, Medical Triage, Medical Operations, Disaster Psychology, and ends with a simulation drill where trainees utilize the skills learned in a realistic hands-on disaster setting.

Mat-Su Citizen Corps Program is responsible for bringing the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training to residents and businesses throughout the Borough. Our Citizen Corps Program has consistently grown and is now the most productive in the State, in number of persons trained and in outreach to the general population. If you are interested in taking the CERT training, please click on the Classes tab above, for the current schedule.

You can also read more about CERT at www.citizencorps.gov/cert or on the Mat-Su CERT brochure.
