Senior Citizen Tuition Waivers

The Board of Regents approved the following revision to Regents’ Policy 05.10.08B on Senior Citizen Tuition Waivers:

'Regular tuition shall be waived for Alaska residents who are otherwise age eligible to receive full social security retirement benefits, who register on a space available basis; that is, when courses can accommodate such students in addition to other enrolled students.'

Transitional provision: 'Individuals who were eligible for senior citizen tuition waivers on September 21, 2005 under the previous policy shall continue to be eligible for the waiver.'

Implementation process for this policy is being defined. In general Alaskan residents born on or before September 21, 1945 who intend to apply for tuition waivers may register the first day of class. Senior citizens applying for tuition waivers may not register during the normal registration period unless they pay the normal tuition and fees. They may register in any MSC credit course for which they are qualified and in which space is available. There is no charge for tuition. Fees (such as lab, material, and CEUs) are not included in the tuition waiver. Applicants for the senior citizen waiver must complete a Tuition Waiver Request form at the time of registration. Senior citizens will not be allowed to drop and re-register for a class in order to take advantage of tuition waivers.

Alaska Residency

For purposes of tuition assessment, Alaskan residents are persons who, prior to the published first day of instruction have been physically present in Alaska for two years (apart from documented acceptable absences) and declare the intention to remain in Alaska indefinitely.

Other people eligible for Alaska resident tuition include members of the United States military on active duty and members of the Alaska National Guard, their spouses and dependent children; dependent children of Alaska residents; dependent children of UA alumni; and other categories of students deemed eligible for Alaska resident tuition by the UA Board of Regents.

Persons who have lived in Alaska for at least one year may qualify for resident rate under a “bona fide” resident provision. Inquire at Student Services for more information or download, complete, and print the residency application (available at http://www.matsu.alaska.edu/students/forms.htm). Consult the current MSC Bulletin for complete resident policy information.
