Compass, Placement Testing
A student registering for English and/or math for the first
time must take an assessment test for placement purposes unless
a student has appropriate SAT or ACT scores. (See
MSC Bulletin). Diagnostic
assessment tests may be required prior to enrollment in certain
other courses and programs. These tests measure competency in
math, reading, and/or written composition and enable an Academic
Advisor to determine the appropriate entry level of instruction.
Individual departments and disciplines may require additional
testing or assessment.

DANTES/DSST
The DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) Program is nationally recognized testing program that provides students the opportunity to receive college credit for learning acquired outside the traditional college classroom. The program consists of exams in 47 undergraduate college courses. The exams are paper and pencil based, but will be moving to computer-based in the near future. A fee of $60 payable by credit card or certified check is assessed by DSST for scoring the exam. An additional proctoring fee will be charged by MSC and payable in the Bookstore.
Students take DANTES exams to save time and money, move right into advanced courses, graduate on time, and satisfy a proficiency requirement. Many students save time and money by taking DANTES exams to gain college credit for what they already know whether it was learned by independent study, advanced high school courses, professional development, or occupation skills.
Taking DANTES exams can provide students the opportunity to satisfy prerequisite courses and move into the advance courses.
Learn more online by visiting the DSST website. Military information is also available online. Call 745-9718 or email testing.center@matsu.alaska.edu for information or to make an appointment for testing.
