UAA Provost Jim Chapman
was on campus last week and met with faculty, staff and students to
discuss the search process for our next Director. He received input from
several people on qualities they’d like to see in a College Director.
To express your opinion you may send an email to: provost@uaa.alaska.edu
The Provost requested that he receive your comments within the next
week, as he wants to begin advertising soon. The process will take some
time to put together a search committee, review and rank all the
applicants and then interview the finalists. He expects to have someone
in place by July 1. We need to get the word out, not only through
advertising, but by word of mouth and networking as well. You can help
by passing the word on to potential candidates.
Chancellor Gorsuch is planning to come to our campus to visit with faculty, staff and students on Thursday, September 27, at 2:00 p.m., in FSM 205. He does not have a specific agenda, but does want to see how things are going on our campus. I hope everyone who is able to attend will be here to welcome the Chancellor. According to UAA Facilities Contract Manager, George Stevens, bids for construction of the Ornter Warehouse will be going out in December, a contract is expected to be awarded in February, and construction should begin in the spring. Student Government’s annual Welcome Back BBQ and Social took place on Thursday, September 20 in the Atrium. From all indications it was a success, especially in terms of the great food that was served ala Chef Tiffany! On Wednesday, October 3, MSC will be conducting a forum on the topic "America Under Attack: What Happens Now?" A panel discussion will be presented by MSC faculty Talis Colberg, Roger Endell and David Zwink and will be moderated by Dr. Will Miles. Individual presentations will be followed by open discussion. The event is open to faculty, staff, students and community members. I encourage you to attend and to invite anyone you think might find this topic of interest. We hope to offer more forums of this nature on a regular basis and appreciate feedback on possible topics for future discussions. Thanks to the Title III Grant Office, we are purchasing two additional SMARTcarts for classroom use. They’re on order now and should arrive in the next couple of weeks. The SMARTcarts we currently have, "Matt" and "Sue," are being put to good use and are booked steady, so the new additions will be appreciated. I’ve not heard talk of a contest to name the new carts, but I’m sure they will need names. Contact the Title III Office if you have any suggestions. Work on the Spring 2002 schedule is moving full speed ahead. We are looking at going to print around October 15; Web and phone registration opens October 29. If you have questions or recommendations, please contact Will Miles in Academic Affairs. Committee appointments for the 2001-2002 academic year have been completed and can be found on our web page at: www.matsu.alaska.edu/html/councils_and_committees.htm A copy is also posted on the bulletin board in the faculty mail room. The Provost Office is accepting ‘04 Initiative funding requests through October. If you are interested in submitting a proposal go to http://www.alaska.edu/swacad/index.html to download the form. All requests for Mat-Su College should be turned in to the Director’s Office no later than October 22. If approved they will be forwarded to the Provost. A surplus equipment sale is planned for October 17 & 18 in our daycare center. Items available include sewing machines (at least part of them are industrial types), floor looms, table looms, frame looms, warping wheels and boards, and a drum carder. In addition there are some chairs, wooden ladders, tomahawks, misc. computer items including monitors, cpu's and keyboards. Lot's of great stuff! We are planning to mark minimum bids, but it will be either a sealed bid or silent auction format. |
