Director Search
- The search committee met for the second time and has finalized the position announcement. It is posted on our web site at:the announcement will be advertised on the Chronicle of Higher Ed web site around Thanksgiving time. The closing date is January 7, 2001. If you know of anyone who is interested please pass this information on to them.
Initiatives - We have submitted a total of 17 FY04 initiatives. Eight are for faculty positions (AET, IT, ART, BLS, HUMS, Math and Social Science); seven for staff positions (physical plant (2), library support, an administrative assistant in Student Services, CTS (2) positions, a publications technician, a recruiter and a marketing/PR director). One is for library resources and another for utilities. Let’s hope at least one or two make through the process. The Chancellor’s cabinet will begin reviewing all of the UAA proposals beginning next week, followed by a special committee, then by Faculty Senate and then the Deans and Directors Council. Selected proposals will be forwarded to the Statewide Academic Affairs Office on January 10 where they will go through several additional reviews, then selected proposals will advance to Phase 2 for additional information, and then........ more reviews.
Final recommendations will go to President Hamilton sometime in August, and he will forward his recommendations to the Board of Regents and finally to the Governor in October of 2002. Keep in mind it is not until next year’s legislative session that we will know for sure which initiatives are actually funded. A lot can happen in a year– and of course this could all change. Whew! And who says the university system is complicated!
As for our FY03 requests we still have one in for an IT position and one in ED. We won’t know until the end of the upcoming legislative session if we receive funding.
We received funding this year (‘02) for a computer classroom for the English department and are working out a plan for where it will be located. The AET program is growing and there is demand for more classes. So we are also looking at putting in another AET lab.
If you are interested in following the
initiative process you can now find links from our web page to both statewide
and UAA tracking web sites by going to:

Welcome Brenda Forsythe to our staff at MSC. She has been hired as the Educational Technology Specialist and will be working out of the Title III Office. Brenda is no stranger to Mat-Su. She has taught several CIOS classes for us over the past years and has a strong background in computer software training. Brenda will be available to help faculty design web pages, put their courses on line, and use various technology tools in the classroom. Watch for upcoming workshops and training opportunities.
CAFÉ Mat-Su has several workshops planned for the year. The next Wednesday forum will be a video presentation and discussion on "Living with Bears in Alaska - Exploding Myths about Safety and Bear Viewing" on Nov. 7 at 7:00 p.m. Stephen Stringham, Ph.D. has done extensive research -- 30 years worth -- on bear behavior and communication. Sounds like a very interesting topic.
Then on Nov. 15 Kim Bloomstrom will conduct a workshop for faculty on academic advising for students.
A video tape of the Chancellor’s opening remarks at the Convocation are on reserve in the library. Also on reserve is a video tape of the October Forum and panel discussion entitled "America Under Attack."
Thanksgiving Baskets - The Math Club and Student Government are working together to make up several food baskets for needy families in the valley. If you want to help out, your donations of non-perishable Thanksgiving related foods would be appreciated. Also, if you know of a family who could really use one of these baskets please contact Randy Reed at rssreed@gci.net or the Student Government Office at 745-9759 by November 19.
