Director Search News - From Rebecca Evans.....
Just to keep everyone "in the loop", here is the scoop on the search for a new Director. The search process is moving along nicely. Our ad should be printed in the Chronicle of Higher Learning on November 23rd (as well as other publications). The deadline for applicants is January 7th, 2002 at which time the Search Committee will begin the screening process. The Search Committee will be meeting on January 24th to move onto the next phase in the search process. I will update everyone when there is news to share!

Eric Blomskog has been quite busy this semester. He was in Fairbanks last month to receive OIT, (operator-in-training) to become certified in Water Disinfectant and Water Distribution. He also received EPA training in groundwater contamination, and attended classes on direct digital control systems for building management, and in-floor radiant heating systems.

Sandy Gravley attended a one-day workshop on October 24 covering supervisory skills training, while Connie Cannon attended a three day NASFA conference (National Association of Student Financial Aid) that same week.

Bonnie Wendt attended a conference on Friday, November 14 on Website Development and Design. She came back very excited about the new things she learned and is anxious to apply them to our website. In case you didn’t know, Bonnie is the behind the scenes person who keeps our web pages updated, with assistance from Eric Frame on some of the more technical stuff. We’ve received a number of compliments on our web page with its "clean" look and ease of navigation.

College Fair - The annual Anchorage College Fair was held at the Egan Center on November 13 and 14. Students from area high schools were there to meet with college recruiters from all over the country. Robin Burdick and Sandy Gravley represented Mat-Su College and from all accounts the event went very well. Students are recognizing that MSC is a viable option as a "college of first choice" and that we are an integral part of the University of Alaska system.

Congratulations to Dr. Ping-Tung Chang on being selected as the 2001 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching "Alaska Professor of the Year." To honor Dr. Chang we are having a reception on Tuesday, November 27 at 3:00 p.m. in the Atrium. Provost Chapman is planning to attend. Please stop by and join us in congratulating Ping-Tung on receiving this prestigious award.

Dr. Will Miles and Tiffany Bowers, MSC student government president, will be attending a statewide conference sponsored by the Alaska Humanities Forum entitled Alaska 20/20 Charting Our Future -- What do we want for our children and grandchildren?) The November 27-28 conference will be held in Anchorage and will be attended by about 300 leaders from around the state who will come together to define a vision for the state, set goals, identify actions to achieve goals, and measure progress over time.

Thanksgiving Baskets - The Math Club and Student Government put together over 20 food baskets for needy families in the valley. Several people contributed food and cash donations which went into the baskets along with turkeys and other items purchased by the clubs. Thanks to everyone who contributed, especially to those who shopped for food, put the baskets together and delivered them to the families. This is a very busy time of year for students. Your efforts are appreciated .
