Congratulations to Michael Carney who bacame the first graduate of Mat_Su College’s new Microsoft IT Training Academy and to Jordan Riske, one of 12 outstanding Information Technology (IT) students in the nation to receive the CompTIA A+ Merit Award. There was a good article in Feb. 8 Frontiersman about the IT Program at MSC.

March is Women’s History Month and to celebrate the Alaska Family Resource Center (former Valley Women’s Resource Center) will host a luncheon on March 7, at Evangelo’s in Wasilla. To support the event, MSC has sponsored a table for six employees. Names were drawn from faculty and staff who have not gone in a previous year. This year the names drawn were: Eric Blomskog, Rebecca Evans, Betsy Korzeniewski, Dan Mielke, Marina Nelson and Marjorie Payton-Hewlett.

If you weren’t lucky enough to have your name drawn for a free lunch but would like to attend, the cost for a ticket is $20.

JKB 124 has been selected to house the English computer classroom. Beginning next fall all composition classes will be taught in this room. All library orientations will be facilitated in this room as well. This computer classroom is the successful result of an initiative request submitted by Viola Harrison and Leza Madsen in order to bring all writing and library classes up to national standards.

CAFÉ Mat-Su presents another forum for the spring ‘02 semester. On February 12, Dr. William Long, Geologist will give a slide presentation and talk about his experiences over a 10 year period exploring the Antarctic. All CAFÉ’ Mat-Su forums are open to the public.

Book Orders - When submitting book orders for classes, faculty have been asked to indicate if they wish to have an instructor copy. Book companies provide free instructor copies. When an instructor takes their copy from the books ordered for students, we pick up the cost. This year we incurred an expense of $6,000 for instructor book copies.

Certificate in web design through OMT Gloria Hensel and Rebecca Evans are currently working on developing a certificate in web design to be added to the OMT program. Classes will be offered through the Skill Center.

Possible allied health training - The new director of Valley Hospital, George Larsen, met with Al Okeson and Will Miles to discuss the possibility of MSC offering training for hospital employees in medical assisting and perhaps courses in pre-nursing. They will continue to look into the possibility of a joint agreement.
