It won’t be much longer now! The Director search is moving right along and so far two candidates have visited the campus. The final two candidates will be here this week with the last interview taking place on April 25 and 26. Hopefully, we will know which candidate will become the Director of MSC by semester’s end. The search committee has done a very good job of selecting four qualified finalists. MSC hosted a table at the 2nd Annual Mat-Su Job Fair held at the Cottonwood Creek Mall on Thursday, April 18. Thanks go out to Robin Burdick, Ann Yaros, Judy Bronson, Sherri Wittman, Jack Cypher, Dan Mielke, and Foxy Hanners for their help in staffing our table and handling inquiries. The event was very well attended and a large number of people were interested in what we have to offer. It never ceases to amaze us the number of people in the community who do not know about MSC. It is so important that we participate in events like this to increase public awareness of our college. CAFÉ Tuesday Night Forum - The topic for this month’s forum will be "Preventing Teen Suicide" and will take place April 23. The Mat-Su Valley has one of the highest teen suicide rates in the country, and because of this, the Women and Children’s Health Associates felt it was important to learn how we can help prevent future tragedies from happening. They are hosting a two-day Suicide Prevention Conference to be held April 26 and 27 at Mat-Su College and have invited Dr. Dennis Leisenring from Stowe Vermont, a leading expert on suicide prevention, to be the keynote speaker at the conference. In addition, he has agreed to give a presentation for the Tuesday night CAFÉ forum at 7:00 p.m. in FSM 204. Both the conference and forum are open to the public and free of charge. If you are interested in attending the conference please contact Brook Youmans at 745-7646. Only two more weeks until spring semester ends! Contingency days are April 23-27 and may be used to make up any classes missed during the semester. Finals begin on April 29 and end on May 4. To celebrate the end of the semester MSC Student Government Council is hosting an "Enchanted Evening Masquerade Ball" on May 4 from 7:00 pm until midnight at the Palmer Elks Lodge with food, a no-host bar, music, dancing and lots of fun. Come in costume or as you are. Tickets for students, faculty, staff, and their guests are on sale now in the Bookstore. Something else to put on your calendar is the MSC Student Government end of year picnic on Thursday, May 2 at noon in the Atrium. This time will also serve as our opportunity to say "thank you" to Al Okeson for serving as our Interim Director for this past year. |
Congratulations to Dr. Viola
Harrison, Associate Professor of English, for being selected as
the recipient of the Chancellor’s 2002 Outstanding Service
Award at the Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence Ceremony held
April 5. We all know what an excellent job Viola has done for
Mat-Su College and UAA, and it is a pleasure to see that her
outstanding work is also appreciated and recognized by the larger
university. The 2000 Accreditation Self-Study, CAFÉ’ forums and
faculty training workshops, new faculty mentoring, and a grant to
furnish a computer classroom for writing and library classes are
just a few of the benefits we have received as a result of Viola’s
efforts and we thank her immensely!
Also nominated for Outstanding Staff Awards were Gretchen Germer in Academic Affairs, Korry Dunham in the Library and the MSC Math Club. They are all known and appreciated for their excellent work at Mat-Su. 2002 Longevity Award recipients
included: Former MSC art student, Melissa Hesselbach (Melissa received her BFA from UAA), had a work of art accepted in a national juried art show. She submitted a diptych called "Rosa Parks Revolution" in an annual juried competition in Monroe, Louisiana. The show is sponsored by the Twin Cities Art Foundation. One painting in the diptych was chosen to be in the show. Eight hundred thirty one (831) entries were submitted by two hundred ninety four artists. Of that number the juror, Mark O'Grady (Pratt Institute), chose one hundred four (104) works by one hundred one artists. Twenty-nine (29) states will be represented in the show. Melissa is the only entrant from Alaska. The show will be on exhibit April 21 through June 8 at the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe. Congratulations Melissa! Commencement will be held on Friday, May 10 at Colony Middle School at 7:30 p.m. Faculty are strongly urged to participate in this important event for our students. If you have never attended a MSC commencement, you may be pleasantly surprised. The ceremony runs just about one hour in length, and it is quite uplifting to see the grins on students’ faces as they receive their diplomas. You can’t help but feel pride for them (and yourself) knowing that you helped them in their success. Faculty and staff are also invited to the graduates’ dinner (followed by a rehearsal) on Wednesday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. Please call 745-9726 to RSVP. |
