Message from the Director

There have always been two ways I can tell fall has arrived. The first is that the Boston Red Sox fall out of pennant contention, the second is all the new students arriving on campus.

Everyone should take some credit for the increase we have seen in enrollment and all those new students. There was a great deal of hard work that went into making this semester the success it is from all areas of the college. The efforts of CTS were also instrumental in making registration much easier for students. By making it easier we provide better service and a better experience.

I also want to thank everyone for dealing with some of our semester start difficulties so well. Every place has those issues as we try new things and products. The problems here were relatively minor to some of the things I have seen.

While we have many new faces this semester we will have more in the future as the searches that are currently underway continue to move forward. The list of new faculty and staff is listed below. If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet these fine people yet, please try to find a moment to say hello.

Fall is here things are beginning to settle down just a bit. Let’s enjoy a great semester and cheer for those Super Bowl Champion Patriots! ...PRD

It has been awhile since our last newsletter and not for lack of news. It has been a very hectic time for everyone and a staffing shortage has forced several departments to take on additional workloads. The staff deserve a pat on the back for pitching in and getting the job done during the busy registration period. Enrollments for fall are quite good, with an increase in headcount of nearly 8% and FTE over 9%. On line registration is becoming popular with students; nearly 50% registered on the web.

Job Vacancies - Now that things are getting back to a more normal state we are able to begin recruiting for our vacant positions. The Personnel/Payroll Technician and the Business Manager positions are now being advertised. The Administrative Assistant position in Student Services is currently in stage two screening, and telephone interviews for the Librarian position are nearly complete and the on-campus interviews will begin soon. Vacancy announcements are posted on our web page at: http://www.matsu.alaska.edu/html/employment_opportunities.htm

Welcome -- new faculty and staff

Suzanne Bach has been hired as the coordinator for our Art Department. She holds a Masters of Arts degree in Interior Design from the University of California, Berkeley. A local artist, Suzanne is the Director of the Alaska Fine Arts Academy and the owner and instructor of the art studio ART BIZ. Her area of expertise is in Sumi-e`, the oriental art of inking. For now, Suzanne will be working half time. Her office will be located in one of the new suite of offices in JKB.

Maxilynn Voss has been appointed to a one-year term as Assistant Professor of Education/Early Childhood. Maxilynn holds an education specialist credential (EDS) in Administration/Management, an MS in Education Administration and an MA in Elementary Education from Ball State University with 27 years of experience in both elementary and post-secondary education. She has worked both as a teacher and principal in elementary schools. Maxilynn’s office will also be located in one of the new offices in JKB.

Finn Rye was recently hired into a full time staff position in the CTS department. Finn is no stranger to most of us. A former Student Government president, he has worked as a temporary employee in CTS for the last year and is also one of our adjunct faculty in CNT. Replacing Finn in his former CTS position is Jordan Riske. Both are a quite knowledgeable in their field of computer networking technology and are very responsive when we cry help!

The college is fortunate to have such qualified additions to our faculty and staff.

Construction update - The remodeling to add office space in JKB is close to completion and will soon be ready for our Workforce faculty and staff and our two new faculty to move into. Getting phone lines hooked up and furniture ordered and a few other details are about all that remain to be done.

Request for proposals - The University is now accepting RFP’s for daycare service at Mat-Su College. A pre-bid conference is scheduled for October 11, 2002.

Computer Systems Technology program approved - After a very long year of curriculum writing and rewriting, submitting for approval to UAB, SAC, UA President and finally the Board of Regents, we are pleased to report that our Computer Systems Technology associate degree program has received the final stamp of approval at last Friday’s Board of Regents meeting in Anchorage. To see the Summary of Actions for the BOR meeting, go to this link: http://www.alaska.edu/bor/minutes/2002/020912.summary.html

Rebecca Evans was recently notified that a proposal she had submitted on distance learning for an upcoming online conference has been accepted. Rebecca has been busy this summer developing a new degree program to be offered at Mat-Su on web development and design.

Adjunct Email accounts - Adjunct faculty should have received notification that all email correspondence will be sent to their UAA email accounts. If you prefer to use a different email address to receive your mail, it is necessary for you to log onto your UAA account and follow the instruction for forwarding messages. You only need do this one time, but it is an important step. Failure to do so will result in not receiving notices from the college. If you need assistance, please contact Gretchen Germer at 745-9754.

Director’s Reception - The official reception to introduce Dr. Paul Dauphinais to the community will take place this Thursday, September 19, from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. University of Alaska President Mark Hamilton, UAA Chancellor Lee Gorsuch and Provost James Chapman all plan to be here. We hope you too will join us. Call 745-9779 to RSVP.

CAFÉ - This is the second year for CAFÉ Mat-Su and plans are underway for the upcoming year. CAFÉ has three components to it. Part one is faculty development and training. These meetings/workshops will be held in the afternoon and are intended for both faculty and staff. Part two is research discussion groups or noon brown bag discussions. If you are working on a paper and would like to bring it in for review and discussion by your colleagues, this would be a great opportunity for you to receive some feedback. Stage three, the most successful component of last year’s CAFÉ, includes community forums. We have a very diverse group of faculty here at Mat-Su and they are encouraged to give presentation on their areas of expertise. Or, perhaps you many know of someone in the broader community who might wish to give a presentation. If you are interested or know of someone, please contact Viola Harrison at 745-9749.

Faculty biographies - Bonnie Wendt has been busy adding biographies of faculty with photos to our web site and will soon be adding biographies for staff. Check out http://www.matsu.alaska.edu/faculty&staff/faculty_bios.htm to see whose bios have been posted so far. If you would like to add yours, please give Bonnie a call at 745-9732 so she can provide you with a form to complete and take your photo.
