Our Interim Business Manager is no longer an interim. After conducting a statewide search, Debbie Dickey was selected as Business Manager for Mat-Su College. The search committee reviewed several qualified candidates and three finalists were invited for interviews. Debbie has done an outstanding job since she stepped in last year as Interim Business Manager. Her breadth of experience on this campus and her many years with the University made her the top choice. Congratulations Debbie! And finally, after a long 2 ½ months without a Personnel/Payroll Technician, the Business Office is very pleased to announce that Tracy Petrosine has been chosen for the position. Welcome to Mat-Su Tracy, and please, don’t be scared off by the backlog of filing we saved for you! Two finalists for the Librarian position were on campus for interviews. Both are very qualified candidates—the search committee did a good job. We know you are all anxious to know who it will be and we hope to be able to make an announcement very soon. A number of searches will be taking place over the next few months and will include:
1. Assistant Director for Academic Affairs (Dr. Miles will be retiring at the end of this academic year) 2. English faculty (Dr. Viola Harrison will also be retiring), 3. Communications faculty (was a term appointment) 4. Office Management & Technology faculty (was a term appointment) 5. Mathematics faculty (new position) 6. Social Science faculty (new position)

Art Gallery Opening and Machetanz Show The official opening of the new art gallery in the FSM building was held Oct. 25 and 26. The event was also a tribute to Fred and Sara Machetanz who have so generously supported the University during their lifetimes. MSC was very fortunate in acquiring a number of Machetanz’ prints that were display along with a number of books the couple donated to our library. Several children’s books, written by Sara and illustrated by Fred were included in the collection. A documentary on Alaska filmed by the Machetanz was available for viewing as well as a taped interview. The show was very well received by the community.

American Flag Display – Now showing in the Gallery is a collection of 10 reproductions of American flag since the 1700’s. We hope that you will make it point to stop by next Monday (Veterans Day) between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. to view this impressive display on loan from the Army National Guard. The Gallery may be opened for special groups or classes upon request by calling the Director’s Office at 745-9726. The next art show will be a display of work done by students in Gene Stotts’ 3-D Design class. The show will run from Nov. 18-Dec. 10. For security purposes, the gallery will be open only on certain days and times and will be posted in the Frontiersman, on campus and via email.
CAFÉ – The CAFÉ community forum held on Tuesday, November 5, was quite a success. Saunders McNeill, from the Alaska Council on the Arts showed several slides she had taken as part of a project to compile photographs and to interview Siberian Yupik Eskimo people from Savoonga in Alaska and Chukotka in Russia. Her presentation included a narration of how a maritime family, separated for over 40 years due to the Cold War, was in a sense reacquainted through her photographs. The presentation was quite moving as well as interesting. We hope to bring Ms. McNeill to our campus again sometime in the future. Anger Manifestations in Contemporary Society will be the next topic for the CAFÉ community forum. Bruce Lankford, a counselor with the Co-occurring Disorders Institute, will be giving the presentation on December 3 at 7:00 p.m. in FSM 205.
Staff Stuff… Fran Russell and Lu Jean Fetchenhier attended the Seta-West Conference for Banner users in Reno on Oct. 8-10. Bette Belanger attended a conference in Chicago on Oct. 28-29 on “How to Market the Adult Learner.” Robin Burdick represented Mat-Su at this year’s College and Career Fair held at the Egan Center in Anchorage on November 4-5.
The 2003 spring schedule is back from the printer. The complete schedule is also available on our website. Web registration opened on Monday, Nov. 4 with 78 registering on the first day! That’s pretty impressive considering only first day of web registration a year ago was a mere three students.
Food Drive- Student Government is having a food drive through November 20. They are collecting canned goods, and other non-perishables item to be given to needy families in time for Thanksgiving. They will be constructing a “food castle” in the Atrium made from the items they collect. Please donate generously to help in this worthy cause.
