Volume 11
Number 4

We hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving Break and are ready for the end of semester rush.  Only eight more class days are left!

Welcome Tom Raffensperger, our new Director of Library Services.  Tom started working for us on December 2.  He says he likes our weather! Yeah, and so do we Tom.  His previous job was working at a college in the United Arab Emirates.  Let’s not tell him what it is usually like this time of year.

Tom, we’re glad to have you as part of our team.

The annual Christmas Potluck and Gift Exchange will be held on Wednesday, December 18, beginning at noon.  This date is also the deadline for faculty to turn in their grades.  Bring a favorite dish to share and a wrapped gift (limit $10) if you wish to participate in the gift exchange.

Search status -The position announcements for five new faculty and the Assistant Director for Academic Affairs were listed in the November 29 publication of the Chronicle of Higher Education and will posted on their web site until December 21.  The announcements are also posted on our web site at:  http://www.matsu.alaska.edu/html/employment_opportunities.htm.  Please forward this link to anyone you think might be interested in applying.

A $211,000 grant has been received by the college which will allow us to offer courses in geographic information systems (GSI).  The grant, made available through ESRI Environmental Systems Research Institute, makes it possible for MSC to purchase software and books and to offer classes in geographic information systems (GIS) Cathy Baxter, Continuing Education Director for the college and writer of the grant, hopes to begin offering community education classes in GIS during the spring semester .

Food Drive - The Student Government food drive resulted in a total of 15 food baskets being donated to needy families in the valley.  Thanks to everyone who contributed to the cause.  Your efforts are well appreciated, especially those students who worked diligently putting the baskets together the day before Thanksgiving.

Recruitment Activities - Scholarship Awareness Day was held on campus November 20 with both the Marines and Army represented. Turn out was good and students seemed pleased with the information that was available. We even had some parents come in with their high school students. Next time we have this event it will be in the evening so that more parents and adults can attend.

December will be another busy month for recruitment efforts.  We want to spread the word to high school students about the great options they have for continuing their education right here in the Valley.
