As part of an effort to improve student success and student retention, Mat-Su College asks all instructors to provide feedback regarding students who may be struggling early in the semester.

Instructors are present with the students during the most important part of their learning experience. This puts instructors in the unique position to help identify where students may be excelling or where they may need additional assistance.

A personal dialogue with students is still the most important contact. In addition to personal efforts, MSC would like to connect students with additional campus resources. The goal is to see students succeed in the classroom and beyond with a collaborative effort from faculty and staff.

What Do Instructors Need To Do?

  • Instructors are encouraged to discuss concerns directly with the student, if possible.
  • Complete an Early Alert Retention Strategy (EARS) form to refer a student experiencing difficulties to Student Services for additional contact. Forms will be delivered to the instructor mailboxes at the beginning of the semester. (Extra forms available in the mailroom)
  • Return the EARS forms to the envelope in the mailroom, to Student Services, or (if off campus) fax to 907-745-9703.

What Happens With This Information?

Student Services will contact the students to discuss issues that may require attention and resources available to support them. Information is also shared in confidence with the academic advisors. This feedback will only be used to support the students with additional resources and for institutional research aimed at improving retention; it will NOT affect the students’ academic standing at MSC.
