Spring 2008
Here are details about some of
the classes being offered in Spring 2008. There are lots of
offerings for the new and returning students in Music, Theatre
and Visual Arts.
Joel Stamoolis is
teaching Music A111 which is all about how to read music.
Students will learn the basics for improvement of playing by
ear, also. This course is designed for all styles of music and
all instruments, including voice. I hope that the Saturday
afternoon slot will prove valuable for those looking for
teaching credential updates.
The one credit Saturday
painting class (ART A100) doesn’t start until February, but also
would be good for those needing a fill in credit. Carmen
Staveland is an Eagle River Artist. We are privileged to have
teach for us this semester.
The 2-D class Art A111 will
begin with a “service-learning project” at the Musk Ox Farm.
Each student will get to design a mural for wall space at the
farm, the manager will select one, and the class will draw it up
from a grid and paint the wall mural. It may be visible at the
farm for a very long time, so it will be fun to be part of this!
The Surface Design Class Art
A271 is being taught by a very talented new instructor, Wendy
Strohmeyer, and will be fun for both fiber artists and those who
like to learn dyeing and embellishing techniques for paper.
Fiber is a popular medium for 1% art in schools etc. so there is
potential for those who excel in this arena.
Noel Bell is a very
accomplished local artist who will be teaching Intermediate
Drawing (ART A205) for us for the first time.
John Barton (ART A105) will be
in his second semester teaching Beginning Drawing, and History
of World Art. He is popular after only one semester.
Not to forget that Casey
Apling(formerly Calhoun) is offering two back to back metal
smith classes on Friday.
Jim Frei is teaching his Beg
Photography on Sat as well as Tues and Thurs evenings. We have a
coveted darkroom, so those who want to try their hand at film
will find us well equipped.
Just a reminder, I am teaching
Interior Design (ID A141) this
semester on Monday nights. It includes space design and layout,
material selections, and color choices among other fun things.
You learn about the profession as well as some do-it-yourself
ideas for those wanting to redo their own homes.
If I mention the Music
Appreciation, offered in the morning and evening, I should say
that they make at least one trip to the Opera in Anchorage
during the semester. I attended a performance with them this
year and it was fantastic.
Art Appreciation will only be
taught in the afternoon on Wednesday, this semester. The plan is
to offer the evening class again next fall.
Speaking of evening classes,
Grant Olson agreed to teach his Acting class in the evening
every other semester. He can’t be in plays himself when he
teaches at night, so he is making a sacrifice for our students.
I hope that we will have lots of budding actors and actresses
sign up! Also, his Intro to theater is at 4:00 on Wednesday.
There are lots of great
offerings, so I hope to see you in class!
